MSW Degree Requirements

 

The Handbook and University Catalog in effect when the student enters the graduate social work program governs his/her graduation requirements. All students should obtain a copy of the FIU catalog upon admission. Students are referred to the catalog for specifics regarding admissions degree requirements and graduation requirements.

General Requirements

  1. The candidate for the MSW degree must satisfactorily complete an officially approved 60 semester hour program of study in class and field instruction in social work. At least 30 semester hours of the program must be completed in residence at Florida International University. Advanced standing students must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours.

  2. A cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 ("B") must be maintained in academic courses and the student must demonstrate professional competence in the required field practica. A grade of "B" is required in all academic social work core courses, (a grade of B- is not acceptable) and a grade of "Pass" is required in the field practica. Students who do not meet this criteria cannot continue in the graduate social work program.

  3. A student must successfully complete all work required for the Master of Social Work degree within 48 months from initial admission.

  4. There must be a positive faculty recommendation for award of the Master of Social Work degree.

NOTE: With the exception of Field Practicum courses, under the University's forgiveness policy graduate students may repeat no more than two courses with no course being repeated more than once. The course shall be repeated on a letter grade basis. Field Practicum courses cannot be repeated.
