ACADEMIC PROGRAMS > MSW CURRICULUM

 

BSSW Curriculum

 

The degree candidate is required to take specific classroom and practicum courses in social work and must complete a sufficient number of elective courses in social work to earn the 60 semester credits required for the MSW degree. Electives must be approved by the faculty advisor. Foundation courses in the first year are offered in the following areas: human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policies and services, social work practice, research and field practicum. Required courses in the Advanced Clinical Practice Concentration, taken during the second year, serve to extend the scope of the foundation by addressing specific subject matter in the areas of policy, research and evaluation. Together with the required practice courses, the concentration field practica, and other requirements, the electives available provide opportunities for flexible variation and depth of penetration in the concentration area.

 

FOUNDATION (FIRST YEAR)


All students are required to complete the following first year courses:

SOW 5105 Human Behavior and the Social Environment I 3 credits
SOW 5235 Social Welfare Policy and Services I 3 credits
SOW 5324 Theory and Practice w/Groups 3 credits
SOW 5342 Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families 3 credits
SOW 5344 Theory and Practice with Communities and Organizations 3 credits
SOW 5404 Social Work Research Methodology 3 credits
SOW 5532 Clinical Practicum I 6 credits
SOW 5629 Social Work Practice w/Diverse Populations 3 credits
  Elective 3 credits

ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE CONCENTRATION (SECOND YEAR)

 

All students are required to complete the following courses in the Advanced Clinical Practice Concentration:

SOW 5125 Human Behavior and the Social Environment II - Psychopathology 3 credits
SOW 6236 Social Welfare Policy and Services II 3 credits
SOW 6425 Clinical Assessment and Intervention Planning 3 credits
SOW 6435 Empirically Based Social Work Practice 3 credits
SOW 6351 Clinical Intervention in Couple and Family Social Work Practice 3 credits
SOW 6535 Clinical Practicum II 3 credits
SOW 6534 Clinical Practicum III 6 credits
  Clinical Practice Elective 3 credits
  Clinical Practice Elective 3 credits

 

NOTE: All students, especially those in the part-time extended program, must follow the required program of study and meet all pre-/co-requisites for courses as described in the FIU Graduate Catalog.

 

ADVANCED STANDING

All students in the Advanced Standing Program are required to complete the second year concentration courses.

With the exception of Field Practicum courses, under the University's forgiveness policy, graduate students may repeat no more than two courses with no course being repeated more than once. The course shall be repeated on a letter grade basis. Field Practicum courses cannot be repeated.
