DR. DEODUTTA ROY SERVES ON THE NATIONAL BOARD OF PUBLIC HEALTH EXAMINERS

Dr. Deodutta Roy, Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Stempel School of Public Health of Florida International University, has joined the effort to create a nationally recognized credentialing exam for public health professionals by serving as a member on the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE). Incorporated in 2005, the charge to the NBPHE is to develop, prepare, administer and evaluate certification examinations for graduates from Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) -accredited schools and programs of public health. It is comprised of distinguished representatives from the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR), the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), private sector public health, as well as the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH).
NBPHE began developing the first public health credentialing exam in 2006 and will be offering it for the first time in August 2008. NBPHE has also been involved with other issues related to developing the exam regarding eligibility, outreach, diversity and research and evaluation. Dr. Roy serves as one of the Item writers for the new certification exam.
All graduates from CEPH-accredited schools and programs are eligible to take the exam. Those who successfully pass the exam will be Certified in Public Health, and can add the initials CPH to their name and degree. It is intended that the certification will elevate the entire profession by encouraging continued education and reinforcing the knowledge and competency of public health professionals as they are held to a national standard of excellence. Dr. Roy is one of many public health professionals who support this effort to strengthen the public health workforce.
