I am delighted that you are considering a career in public health, nutrition, health services administration or social work. I am especially pleased that you are considering pursuing your education at Florida International University. FIU is a dynamic and rapidly growing university located in one of the most exciting cities in the world. Miami serves as a major international hub for commerce, education and travel and with its rich population diversity serves as a unique geographical location for our university. The unique characteristics of the greater Miami metropolitan area provide a perfect location for our mission of community service and engagement as it relates to our focus on education, research and professional practice.
The Robert Stempel School of Public Health is unique among the nation’s accredited schools of public health in its interdisciplinary structure which combines the five major disciplines of public health in partnership with the disciplines of nutrition, dietetics and social work. This special blend of disciplines and programs afford us the opportunity to better explore and understand the interrelatedness of social, biological, environmental and cultural determinates of health and well-being. We strongly strive to reflect the diversity of the greater community so as to maximize our understanding and effectiveness in providing cross-cultural health and mental health services in today’s heterogeneous mix of cultures and languages.
All health professions afford the opportunity to serve the greater population; public health is unique among the health professions due to its emphasis on population health rather than focusing on individuals. Public health interventions are responsible for 80 percent of the increase in the lifespan that Americans have enjoyed since the year 1900. The future health of the planet and its inhabitants is dependent on the success of our public health interventions. I encourage you to be part of this noble effort.
