WELCOME MESSAGE

WELCOME MESSAGE BY VIRGINIA McCOY

Welcome!  Health promotion and disease prevention in public health addresses the behavioral, social, and cultural factors related to individual, community, and population health protection and promotion and health disparities over the life course.

Many of the 10 great accomplishments of the 20th Century in public health fall into the domain of health promotion and disease prevention –motor vehicle safety, safer and healthier foods, healthier mothers and babies, and recognition of tobacco as a health hazard.  In addition to educating and training future leaders, the HPDP faculty conduct progressive research in areas that are among the leading health indicators for national objectives to improve health (Healthy People 2010)---HIV/AIDS and cancer prevention; translate research findings into policies, programs and public health practice;  and promote healthy lives for the underserved and all the peoples of South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America.  The keystone of our teaching, research and service, like public health, is the community.

It is our aim that graduates will contribute to research and practice in the development, administration, and evaluation of programs and policies in health promotion and disease prevention that promote and sustain healthy environments and healthy lives for individuals, communities, and populations.  The SSPH offers a truly multicultural experience, with students originating from over 50 different countries.
