Background
Since joining FIU in 2001, he has served on the faculty in Public Health through several college reorganizations. Recently, he was chosen for an “Unsung Hero” award at the 2006 U.S. Conference on AIDS. Prior to becoming a professor at FIU, he was Director of Research and Training at the Addiction Research Center at the University of Miami/Jackson Medical Center (1992-2002), where the focus of his work was on conducting HIV/AIDS research with inner city minority drug abusing high risk populations. This included NIH funded grants with adolescent offenders, VA patients, seriously mentally ill adults, HIV+ patients, and pregnant women.

Research
His research has focused on approaches to reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
He established FIU’s AIDS Prevention Program as the umbrella for several federally funded studies that focus on effective interventions for high risk, underserved groups living in South Florida, among them Caribbean and Latin American immigrants, the mentally ill and incarcerated youth.
He has led 8 NIH-funded projects totally over $25 million in the area of HIV and substance abuse.
He has published over 100 articles in referred journals and 20 book chapters, and made frequent national and international presentations at professional meetings.
