ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Master of Public Health (MPH) with a Specialization in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Students in the MPH program come from many disciplines, but all have an interest in promoting health and preventing disease.  They are exposed to courses in community organization and program evaluation taught by Dr. Bill Darrow, Ph.D., a former CDC Director, who was on the team that defined HIV as a sexually transmitted disease.  Students take advantage of varied internships to put their academic training into community practice.  Graduates of the Master of Public Health degree hold positions in local health departments, in community-based agencies, and wellness programs.  Elvira Velez (1993) is Director of University Health Services on the Biscayne Bay Campus of FIU; Anthony Lau (2005) is Epidemiologist for the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention at the Miami-Dade County Health Department; Ardith Clayton-Wright (2000) is the Wellness Coordinator at the Broward County Healthy Department.

Students will be exposed to a population perspective and will gain an ecological understanding of the causes and prevention of diseases. The Minor will emphasize health issues that affect society as whole as well as vulnerable populations. Students will graduate with a strong sense of values, ethics, and civic engagement.
