Welcome to the Department Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Stempel School of Public Health. It is my great pleasure to introduce you to our department which is led by our highly qualified and experienced faculty members on our beautiful and lively campus in Miami, Florida. Epidemiology and biostatistics are the heart of public health. Epidemiology is essential for the detection, control, and prevention of health problems. It provides the basis for policies and programs to protect and promote public health. The world faces many challenges to keeping its populations safe and healthy.
The need for qualified epidemiologists and biostatisticians to address these problems has grown enormously. The degree programs in our department equip students with the knowledge and skills to become well-trained practitioners, independent investigators, teachers and leaders in the field to meet ever- growing demands at the local, regional, national and international levels. We offer a Graduate Certificate, an MPH, and a PhD in Public Health with a specialization in Epidemiology as well as an MPH in Biostatistics. These programs are flexible enough to be tailored to the aspirations of our students. For example, students can plan to develop an expertise in chronic diseases, infectious diseases, or health disparities. A faculty advisor will work with the student to develop the appropriate academic and career plans. Accordingly, the student’s coursework, research, and field experience will be geared towards their plan. Faculty advisors help students realize their full academic potential and career goals. We are fully committed to training students in both master’s and doctoral level programs.
Our courses are strongly reinforced by our faculty research. Students receive a foundation of theoretical understanding and hands-on training in applications of methods and techniques. Many of our faculty members have solid experience in medicine as well as public health practice at state, national and international levels. This combination has well-prepared them to teach our students effectively. Like the FIU student body, our faculty members' professional backgrounds and ethnicities are diverse. Our program is truly multicultural, providing a conducive environment for learning. I invite you to explore our website. I hope that it will assist you as you consider our academic programs as the foundation for your career. I highly encourage you to make a personal visit to the Stempel School of Public Health.
