International Students with Foreign degrees in Dietetics or Nutrition Science
Students who hold a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from a foreign country and are interested in becoming Registered Dietitians can take courses in FIU’s Dietetics and Nutrition Department as non-degree seeking students. A number of courses are required to meet the didactic requirements in dietetics necessary to obtain a verification statement from our department (please visit www.eatright.org for more information on the requirements for RD).
Upon completion of this program, all students are eligible to receive a Didactic Program Verification Statement and may apply to an accredited dietetic internship program to obtain the supervised practice experience required to become eligible to sit for the National Registration Examination for Dietitian
A minimum of 15 credit hours must be taken at FIU including Community Nutrition, Medical Nutrition Therapy/Lab, Clinical Nutrition/Lab, Advanced Nutrition, and others as your advisor deems necessary to obtain a verification statement. Please refer to the Policies & Procedure manual for a list of all of the courses required.
Students interested in this program must contact the Department to set up an appointment with the Director of the Didactic and Coordinated Programs in Dietetics and Nutrition. Students must bring the following materials to their advisement appointment:
1. Official Transcripts. An official copy of the foreign transcript evaluation including copy of official foreign transcripts. Dietetics and Nutrition must have an original transcript(s) from all colleges and/or universities attended.
2. Course Descriptions (in English)
3. Have your academic degree evaluated for equivalency to a US degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The Commission of Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association has a list of approved, nonprofit agencies that perform this specialized service. List of agencies are located on the American Dietetics Association, Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education web page (http://www.eatright.org). Students must use one of the listed agencies (approved by FIU) on this web site for evaluation of foreign transcripts. The Dietetics and Nutrition Department must have an original transcript from one of the agencies used to evaluate for the equivalency of a U.S. degree for their files (Students must obtain two copies of equivalency reports).
Contact the agency for current information, procedure, and costs.
